STILLVALE RAINBOW HATTIE (EX-92) came to Skagvale on June 12, 1962, and is the Foundation of today’s ‘HATTIE FAMILY’ at Skagvale. RAINBOW HATTIE was found in the small 16-17 cow herd of Nels Walen in Silvana, Washington (about 25 miles south of Sedro-Woolley). She had been bred by the Sather Brothers, Hilmer and Julius (also of Silvana), a pair of older Norwegian bachelors who were well-known to be real ‘characters’. The Sather Bros. had bred a fine registered herd that had been among the top-producing herds in Washington for many years, using early-day Carnation Farms-bred sires extensively. Those early-day bulls were of intense “Governor of Carnation” blood, … dominant also in RAINBOW HATTIE’s pedigree, with four close shots in her dam, Stillvale Pontiac Rose.

The story goes that Nels Walen won STILLVALE RAINBOW HATTIE as a heifer in a whiskey-induced poker game with the Sather Bros.!! Now, Mr. Walen was nearing retirement age, and when John Tenneson spotted RAINBOW HATTIE at nearly 7 years of age at his farm while selecting cattle for a state sale, Nels mentioned that while she would not be available as a sale consignment, he would consider selling her privately. The Tenneson Bros. were not in a financial position at that time which would permit them to purchase such a cow, but they mentioned it to then-Carnation Farms herdman, Kent Mattson. In short order he had made arrangements for HATTIE’s purchase, … however, fate reared its ugly head in the form of a testing association feud between the CTA (which both Nels Walen and the Sather Bros. had joined) and DHIA (of which Russ Pfeiffer, manager of Carnation Farms, was State President). Russ absolutely refused to have anything to do with any cow from a CTA herd,… no matter how great she might be!!

When Nels was told the sale had fallen through and why,… he became one very mad Norwegian!! He came to Skagvale, told John and Glen that he wanted RAINBOW HATTIE to come to their farm, and offered her to them at a low price of $1,500!! Unfortunately, the Tenneson Bros. simply did not have the cash. Nels countered by telling them to pay for her when they could, with no interest!

And so RAINBOW HATTIE came to Skagvale on one fine June day in 1962, and she and her progeny have made,… and continue to make,… history at Skagvale! She became the first 35,000 lb. cow to have a 35,000 lb. daughter. That daughter, SKAGVALE GRACEFUL HATTIE (VG-87) (sired by a bull with an intense Governor of Carnation – Frasea – Colony pedigree) became the World Champion Milk Producer in 1971 with 44,019 lbs. milk in 365 days (2x). She later became the youngest cow to ever cross the 200,000 lb. Lifetime mark. Interestingly, GRACEFUL HATTIE’s sire, Skagvale Charming Dynamic, was an own son of PUGET SOUND NETHERLAND GRACE (EX-93), who is the Foundation Cow of Skagvale’s GAY family!! Therefore, the entire HATTIE family at Skagvale carries the blood of Old Grace!

GRACEFUL HATTIE’s maternal granddaughter, SKAGVALE PRECIOUS HATTIE (EX-94), was one of the most ‘complete’ cows to ever grace the Skagvale pastures,… proving herself as a highly respected show cow (2x Grand Champion – WA. State Show), an outstanding producer, and even more importantly,… a powerful breeding matron!! Her progeny include two “Excellent-93” daughters – SKAGVALE MIDNIGHT HATTIE (EX-93) and SKAGVALE GOLDEN HATTIE (EX-93), who was sired by Skagvale Golden Model, a Mark Anthony son of SKAGVALE CITATION LULU (EX-95).

SKAGVALE GOLDEN HATTIE (EX-93) followed in her famous dam’s footsteps through the showring, also being a Grand Champion of the WA. State Show,… as well as being an exceptional producer. Her genetic impact on the HATTIE FAMILY in the Skagvale herd is enormous!! GOLDEN HATTIE was flushed to Skagvale Countryman, resulting in three “Excellent” daughters,… 2 of whom scored Excellent-93, … and 1 VG-89-2y daughter, who was exported!! Two of these four Countryman daughters have had a pronounced impact on this family in today’s Skagvale herd, and in turn will be dominant in future HATTIE FAMILY pedigrees (please see the breeding flow chart below). We are nothing short of ecstatic about the HATTIE family members as they look today! While we may not have advertised or ET-flushed the  HATTIE’s as much as their worth has certainly merited, they have consistently and quietly produced great one after great one, … and they are continuing to do so, … at an accelerating pace!! The HATTIE youngsters milking today are definitely the mouth-watering kind!!
